Intermittent Fasting & Weight Loss

Image
Intermittent Fasting Intermittent Fasting is a relative newcomer diet that has been trending upward in popularity in recent years. Intermittent Fasting is an umbrella term for at least three different types of diets: •Time restricted •Alternate day fasting •The 5/2 diet Time restricted : Often referred to as a 16/8 diet. Refers to eating in an 8hr time frame and 16 hours of taking only water. Example: eat from 10am-6pm and fast the rest of the time. Alternate Day Fasting: here there are days when one eats about a quarter of their normal intake-about 500 cal- alternating with "feast" days. The 5/2 diet : this is a variation on the alternate-day approach, with the numbers referring to days rather than hours. Participants limit their calories to about 500 cal for two (nonconsecutive) days a week and eat freely on the other five. Do the diets work? And better yet, will the participants stick to it? •A JAMA study published in 2017 found that alternate day fasting was not superi...

Love Coffee first thing in the morning?

Two reasons why you might want to change the timing of your morning caffeine ☕ A caffeine fix is a pretty common way of waking up in the morning, helping us get ready to tackle the day. Many of us enjoy our morning caffeination and Couldn't bare the thought of giving it up. We don't necessarily have to give it up. Coffee significantly contributes to our daily intake of phytonutrients & It is associated with many health benefits. Luckily it's a case of when instead of never. And 2 reasons why you might want to delay: 1️⃣ Caffeine interferes with the absorption of some essential nutrients, including calcium, vitamin D, and iron. It's also a diuretic and can increase the loss of water-soluble vitamins, e.g., B vitamins & vitamin C. drinking coffee one hour before a meal does not affect iron absorption. Upping the amount Of vitamin & copper in your meals have also been found to improve iron absorption and reduce the impact that coffee/ caffeinated drinks has 2️⃣...

Optimal Pharmacologic Treatment of Heart Failure With Preserved and Mildly Reduced Ejection Fraction A Meta-analysis

Image
By Dr. Vinayak S Hiremath, MD, MRCP(Endocrinology & Diabetes), KMK Hospital Cochin, Heart Failure (HF) affects 64 million people around the world, and it is a major cause of death and disability. Based on the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), new guidelines divide HF into HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), HF with mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFmrEF), and HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).  Since the 1980s, drug therapy for HFrEF has been getting better. Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitors (ARNIs), and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs) were all linked to a lower risk of HF hospitalisation than placebo. The results of this study suggest that using combinations of SGLT2 inhibitors, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors–angiotensin receptor blockers, and -blockers led to benefits in HF hospitalisation rather than all-cause death among patients with HFpEF and HFmrEF.  A ...
